Frequently Asked Questions
Also known as an epicyclic gearhead or gearbox, a planetary gearhead is a sophisticated yet simple device that offers a wide range of uses when controlled and precise power delivery are needed—from robotics and industrial machinery to electric tools and medical devices. Due to the nature of its design and even load distribution, planetary gearheads can be both compact and powerful.
In the middle of your gear system rests the central input gear, known as the sun gear, around which spur gears or planetary gears/pinions are evenly arranged. This rotation around the sun gear is where these gearboxes get their name.
The planetary pinions are attached to a planet carrier, which allows them to rotate at the same speed and direction. All pinions are then encased within an outer ring gear. In most applications, the ring gear is stationery, but it can also rotate.
The gear ratio for single-stage planetary gearboxes is typically 3:1. Additional planetary stages can be added inside the ring gear to achieve higher gear ratios for applications requiring high torque.
“Gearhead” and “gearbox” often refer to the same thing. Depending on your background, you may prefer to use the term “gearhead” because it describes the component that sits at the head of a servo/stepper motor.
A planetary gearhead (also known as a gearbox) can function as a "gear reducer" when configured to reduce speed and increase torque. All gear reducers are gearboxes/gearheads, but not all gearboxes necessarily reduce speed.
This type of gearbox system has too many uses to name. Its flexible, robust, and simple configuration make it one of the most common motor gearheads used in mechanical engineering. They are often found in applications requiring high power, efficiency, and speed—from electric toothbrushes to industrial wrappers to theme park rides.
